CEO and Founder

Cathryn Kennedy’s sweet spot is finding that golden nugget in your story and pinpointing the best communications channel to reach your target audience.

With more than 25 years of experience with strategic communication, Cathryn focuses on communicating complicated public policy issues; connecting all types of clients with the media; and developing creative message strategies.

Before starting her independent consulting business in 2002, Cathryn was a senior vice president at Weber Shandwick Public Relations in Minneapolis. At Weber Shandwick, her clients included major multi-national corporations, governmental entities and nonprofit organizations, such as Best Buy, Cargill, Hormel, and Hazelden. She has earned numerous awards including the prestigious Silver Anvil award in public affairs from the Public Relations Society of America.

Cathryn’s other experience includes public service as the press secretary for a Minnesota Gov. Al Quie and media director for the Minnesota House Republican Caucus.  She has served as a member of the Minnesota News Council and is a former reporter for the Red Wing Republican Eagle and Olathe Daily News.Cathryn is a board member of Climate Generation, a Will Steger Legacy, serves on the A. Q. Miller Journalism Advisory Council at Kansas State University and is a former president of the Minnesota Public Relations Society of America.Cathryn received her undergraduate degree in journalism from Kansas State University and her MBA from the University of St. Thomas, Saint Paul, Minn.


Pam McCarthy-Kern

Independent Consultant

Pam is a communications professional who excels at promoting people, places and things through a savvy mix of targeted media relations campaigns, clever events and keen attention to details large and small. Through her work in management at Aveda Corporation, Macy’s and NordicTrack, and as an independent consultant for numerous business and nonprofits, she has crafted and implemented public relations campaigns and events on local and national levels.

In addition to her communications work, Pam owned a successful event design company for 15 years with a client list that included American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, D’Amico Catering, Habitat for Humanity, KPMG, L’Oreal Paris, Martha Stewart Omnimedia, Minnesota Medical Foundation, University of Minnesota Foundation, University of Minnesota Alumni Association and Wolfgang Puck Catering.

Pam is passionate about community service and gives her time and resources to a number of nonprofits.  Like Cathy, Pam is a graduate of Kansas State University and a native of Kansas.  She will forever be awed by the beauty of the Flint Hills, the smell of Kansas grass on a warm summer day, the excitement of K-State football, and the deliciousness of a Vista burger.  Pam resides with her husband and teenage son in Minneapolis.


Emily Nesse

Independent Consultant

One of Emily’s passions is organizing and executing on-the-ground grassroots campaigns. From messaging, identifying influencers and implementing strategy, Emily guides clients through the public affairs landscape.

Almost 15 years ago, Emily got her start in the world of communications as a college beat reporter for the Badger Herald in Madison, Wisconsin. Her days covering campus news eventually led Emily to her working alongside Cathryn Kennedy.  In collaboration with the Cathryn Kennedy team, Emily develops and implements messaging strategies and provides media relations to a wide-range of clients.  Emily currently provides media relations support to Mortenson Construction, working to highlight the architectural and community significance of new construction projects across the country.  In addition, Emily has spent the past year working closely with several Twin Cities’ clean energy organizations to promote sustainable clean energy policy at the state and federal level. She also assists on a variety of Cathryn Kennedy Consulting clients, including Union Depot St. Paul.

Emily is passionate about literacy, currently serving as a board member of Bound to Be, a nonprofit organization that puts books into the hands of children throughout Washington County.  Prior to joining Cathryn Kennedy’s team, Emily served as Communications Manager for the Minnesota Senate Republican Caucus and Senior Grassroots Coordinator at Weber Johnson Public Affairs. Emily received her undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota and Juris Doctor degree from William Mitchell College of Law.
